The Coastal Star

In Memory of his recent sudden passing, I am sad to share that Mark Alba passed suddently this past weekend. Mark lived on Surf road in the pocket for many years and was a great guy, a good friend, a good man. He was honest, caring, and the kind of guy who'd drop everything to lend a hand. One of his last projects in the neighborhood was the building of the famous Dog Beach Tiki Bar!

I first met Mark years ago through a mutual friend. Last Fall, my boyfriend was his roommate for a brief period until they had to move out of the Surf Rd. house. Mark was an extremely bright person who loved history and was a voracious reader. You could often find Mark, under an umbrella, reading one of his history tomes on the beach. Mark graduated from Boston College with degrees in History and Economics I believe. We spoke of politics even though we were very much on the opposite sides of the aisle. John is quite right to point out his Tiki Bar accomplishments which Mark was quite proud of. He will be missed by many!
John - Thanks for posting this.
Mark was from my hometown, Winchester, Massachusetts, which is just outside of Boston. It is funny that we both wound up in the County Pocket! We were graduates of the same high school, separated by about fifteen years time. Our school's athletics team was called the Sachems, which is a word for some sort of Indian chief and which had been the target in recent years of unsuccessful attempts to change the name to something more PC. Mark and I shared a fondness for our small town's dramas. After one of the West Palm Beach marathons I bumped into Mark on Surf Road and he said, "Hey, did you see that the kid who won the marathon was from Winchie? Gooooo Sachems!" It cracks me up just to write it. We also shared an interest in general Boston-lore and often traded stories of the Corrupt Midget, an infamous Boston politician. The Corrupt Midget recently took my father to lunch and I am so glad I had the opportunity to tell Mark about the event. Mark laughed and laughed. What a great guy. I will miss him.
Just saw the wonderful article and photo of Mark in the new issue of the Coastal Star! What a great write-up about Mark!
We miss you big guy!!!
