Supporters organize with aim to buy WXEL-TV

    A group of WXEL-TV supporters, including its president and CEO, its chief fundraiser and area education and media executives, have until Dec. 31 to work out a purchase agreement to buy the station from Barry University before the sale is opened to other bidders.

    “We’re very optimistic,” said WXEL President and CEO Bernard Henneberg said. “There are people here who want to keep WXEL local. They don’t want us to go away.”

WXEL radio will be known as WPBI

    Seven years after it was put on the selling block, WXEL-FM finally sold to Classical South Florida after the Federal Communications Commission approved a deal with Barry University May 16.

    The 40-year-old station, started to educate migrant workers and home to local public affairs broadcasting as well as national radio programming, will be known as WPBI.

WXEL sale advances; critics unconvinced

MIAMI —The sale of WXEL, the station started more than 40 years ago to educate local migrant workers, moved closer to joining the nation’s biggest team in public radio when the Florida Board of Education granted a lease transfer Dec. 17.

The sale, which has pitted listeners against Barry University and its suitor, Classical South Florida, now goes to the Federal Communications Commission.

Board gathers opposition to WXEL sale

The Community Advisory Board of WXEL has a seat on the bus for anyone willing to help show the state Board of Education that there’s local opposition to the public radio station’s sale to Classical South Florida. The Board of Education is set to consider the sale at its Dec. 17 meeting at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, 300 NE Second Ave. It’s a required step before the sale can be closed.

WXEL president to sign off

Palm Beach County public radio station WXEL President Jerry Carr is retiring from the station he has piloted for 13 years.

Carr ushered WXEL’s TV and radio operations into the digital age and led the station through repairs after Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
