    The on-again, off-again breakwater project to protect South Palm Beach’s eroding shoreline is back on the drawing board six months after Palm Beach County officials had declared it so much scrap paper.

    “Finally, I have some good news,” Leanne Welch, a supervisor in the county’s environmental resources management department, told the Town Council Sept. 20. “We have the go-ahead to restart the environmental impact study.”

Plans for breakwaters designed to halt erosion on the sand-starved beaches of South Palm Beach and Lantana were cancelled, in effect, by Palm Beach County commissioners at a June 28 workshop.

Faced with the inability to get a federal permit for above-water structures off the Singer Island beach after three decades of discussion, commissioners were not willing to pursue a project of submerged breakwaters, which county officials said would be far less effective and more expensive.

Hope for a proposed 1.3-mile breakwater project designed to protect the shrinking South Palm Beach and Lantana shoreline is eroding faster than the beach.

When Palm Beach County commissioners voted 5-2 on March 22 to scuttle a $50 million breakwater project for Singer Island, county officials said they wouldn’t pursue any other breakwaters elsewhere.
