Ocean Ridge/Boynton Beach: Fire Station No. 1 back on the budget chopping block

By Angie Francalancia

Boynton Beach commissioners once again are talking about closing the city’s downtown fire station, which ran on more than half the calls in Ocean Ridge last year, to cut costs.

During budget workshops last month, Commissioner Steven Holzman said the city…

Closing Fire Station #1 back on agenda in Boynton Beach

By Angie Francalancia

Another budget year approaches in Boynton Beach, and another round of discussions has begun on closing Fire Station #1 that handles calls in Ocean Ridge.

During the second day of Boynton Beach’s budget workshops, Commissioner Steven Holzman said the city could almost balance its fire department budget by closing Station #1 and laying off six of the firefighters that now staff it and moving the other three to Station #4 on Federal Highway…

Boynton Beach/Ocean Ridge: Fire Station #1 decision on hold

By Angie Francalancia

Any efforts at moving Boynton Beach’s downtown fire station to Ocean Ridge are “on hold” and may remain so for perhaps months as Boynton Beach continues to try to sell three parcels of property that affect the city’s space needs.

The Boynton Beach City Commission rejected the single bid it got on one of the three parcels and agreed to change the city’s rules for sale of disposable property so it can enlist a real estate broker rather than…

Ocean Ridge: Ocean Ridge looks at options for fire rescue service

By Angie Francalancia

With continuing uncertainty over emergency services for the coastal towns, Ocean Ridge City Manager Ken Schenck reached out to private ambulance company American Medical Response to investigate options.

It could cost as much as $650,000, would require changes to several existing agreements, and could happen no sooner than about 18 months from now. But Schenck said it was necessary for the town to know its options, given the potential for changes to…

Ocean Ridge: Testing the trucks

Ocean Ridge Police officials and Boynton Beach paramedics recently tried parking a fire truck and an EMS rescue vehicle in the garage behind town hall to confirm that the equipment would fit.  Since the garage was built when Ocean Ridge still provided its own fire protection,…

Along the Coast: Boynton might move fire station to Ocean Ridge

By Angie Francalancia

The best place for Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Station No. 1 might be in Ocean Ridge.

Boynton Beach’s City Commission agreed during a workshop late last month to talk about the potential of moving Station No. 1 into Ocean Ridge’s Town Hall and garage.

Ocean Ridge, along with Briny Breezes, contracts for fire rescue service from Boynton Beach.

Earlier in the month, Ocean Ridge Mayor Ken Kaleel sent a letter to Boynton Beach Mayor Jose…

Along the Coast: Mayors find consolidation consultant’s price steep

By Steve Plunkett

When coastal mayors next meet to discuss ways to consolidate services and reduce costs, they’ll have a big price tag to digest: $71,500.

That’s how much consultant Willdan Homeland Solutions wants to study the possibility of making one fire-rescue department to serve Gulf Stream, Ocean Ridge, Briny Breezes, Manalapan and Lantana.

The cost estimate surprised at least one mayor.

“I don’t think that’s too accurate,” said Ken Kaleel of Ocean… Continue

Ocean Ridge/Briny Breezes: Trims to Boynton fire-rescue may slow island service

By Angie Francalancia

Starting Oct. 1, fire service — or ambulance service — will take longer to reach Ocean Ridge and Briny Breezes.

That’s because Boynton Beach, which provides fire rescue services to both towns, will be removing from operation one of its two emergency vehicles now run out… Continue

County Pocket: New response criteria outlined for county pocket

By Angie Francalancia

If a county pocket resident were choking today, Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue would call Boynton Beach to race to his aid, shaving several minutes off the response time from the county’s nearest station.

Since November 2009, when 48-year-old Bill Dunn choked on a bite of steak and died while Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue took nearly 13 minutes to arrive from its closest station — near Military Trail — residents in the pocket have pushed for faster response… Continue

County Pocket: Emergency response policy still vexes residents

By Nirvi Shah

Ever since it took Palm Beach County Fire Rescue more than 12 minutes to respond to the scene of a man choking in the county pocket last year — a call that ended in the man’s death — a group of the area’s residents have been clamoring for emergency service that comes from a much closer rescue agency.

Now they have it. Sort of.

Since March, Boynton Beach Fire Rescue — which is miles nearer to the area than the responding county fire station — has been called upon… Continue
