Briny Breezes: Board steers park away from potential sale

By Tim O’Meilia

Briny Breezes’ neighbors can rest easy. The oceanfront town-mobile home park has scotched any thought of high-rise condos and oceanfront hotels and will focus on a more low-key future — at least for now.

The nine-member board of the corporation that owns the park unanimously decided April 11 not to pursue the proposal by a Long Island developer to buy the park at a price to be named later.

“We did not have enough information on…

Briny Breezes: Briny tells developer, ‘thanks, but no thanks.’

By Tim O’Meilia

About that plan to build high rise condos, an oceanfront hotel and shops where the mobile homes of Briny Breezes have set for decades?

Never mind.

The nine-member board of the corporation that owns the park unanimously decided April 11 not to pursue the proposal by a New York developer to buy the park at a price to be named later.

“We did not have enough information on the sales price or the cost that would be incurred for…

Briny Breezes: Builder proposes redevelopment without sale price

By Tim O’Meilia

Five years ago, a developer figured the homey oceanfront mobile home park of Briny Breezes was worth half a billion dollars if it were decorated with high rise condominium towers, a pricey hotel and several hundred time-shares.

He was wrong. Ocean Land Investments, the Boca Raton developer, couldn’t convince anyone beyond the town limits of that vision and the deal crashed, leaving unhappy residents, strained…

Briny Breezes: Developer pitches idea for condos, hotel

By Tim O’Meilia

Five years after a half-billion dollar sale collapsed, Briny Breezes’ 43 acres of ocean-to-Intracoastal mobile homes is on a land developer’s shopping list.

An unnamed development firm has pitched the idea of erecting twin 20-story towers and a 350-room hotel on the beach and constructing a row of three-story condos on the west side of State Road A1A — totaling more than 1,200 units — where rows of mobile homes now sit.

Briny Breezes…

South Palm Beach: Hotel development votes garner ethics complaints

By Tim O’Meilia

Palm Beach Oceanfront Inn owner Pjeter Paloka filed complaints with the state ethics commission against two South Palm Beach Planning Board members in February and said he plans to file against a third.

Paloka alleged that Planning Board Chairman Michael Nevard and member Dee Robinson were biased against his family’s plans to replace the two-story hotel with a 10-story hotel-condominium and actively worked against the proposal while sitting as board members.… Continue

SOUTH PALM BEACH: Planning board members keep seats

By Tim O’Meilia

For the second time in three months, South Palm Beach Mayor Martin Millar’s attempt to remove three planning board members failed by an identical 3-2 vote.

The mayor called for the removal of planning board Chairman Mike Nevard and members Pat Festino and Dee Robinson at the Jan. 26 Town Council meeting after a fourth planning board member, Michael Mead, complained that the three had conflicts of interest in considering a proposed 10-story hotel.

“Why is everyone… Continue

SOUTH PALM BEACH: Petition drive falters with clerk’s ruling

By Tim O’Meilia

A petition drive to banish a high-rise hotel permanently from the South Palm Beach landscape was rejected by town officials Jan. 26.

More than 20 percent of the town’s 1,300 registered voters signed petitions to put three charter questions on the March 9 ballot. But Town Clerk Janet Whipple ruled that the paperwork did not meet town charter or state law requirements. If approved by voters, new buildings would have been limited to a 60-foot height, voters would have… Continue

Three planning board members face ethics complaint

By Tim O’Meilia

The shadow of a proposed 10-story hotel — rejected by a single vote by the South Palm Beach Town Council in October — continues to darken town politics.

Urged by one of the owners of the Palm Beach Oceanfront Inn, the council voted 3-2 on Nov. 18 to file a complaint with the state ethics commission against three town planning board members. Moments earlier, the council declined to remove two members from the board by a 3-2 vote.

Mayor Martin Millar charged… Continue
