Lantana officials revealed a conceptual plan to turn a one-acre site on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway into a passive waterfront park with 31 parking spaces.
The site, at 106-120 N. Lake Drive, just north of Ocean Avenue, was purchased early…

Lantana: Night work to continue on Ocean Avenue Bridge
By Mary Thurwachter
Council members in Lantana talked about rescinding the noise variance they approved in January so that contractors, by working at night, could more easily meet their construction deadlines for the Ocean Avenue Bridge.
Although clearly annoyed when it looked like the contractor’s representative was a no-show at the March 11 meeting, when the topic was up for discussion, the town chose to take no action.
“They don’t come and…

Manalapan: Police dispatching to remain in-house
By Tim O’Meilia
For the second time in two years, the Manalapan Town Commission rejected bids from outside agencies to handle the town’s police dispatch services.
Both neighboring Ocean Ridge and Lantana submitted proposals well under the town’s $241,600 annual dispatch costs, but Point Manalapan residents called for the dispatch center/gatehouse at the entrance to the point to continue to be manned 24 hours a day.
Hiring guards to man the center would…

Lantana: Savings wrought by new manager result in raises
By Mary Thurwachter
Taxpayers in Lantana will save about $1 million over the next nine years because the town is refinancing its water and sewer bonds.
At its Nov. 26 meeting, the Town Council agreed to refinance the bonds with TD Bank for a principal amount not to exceed $4.5 million.
In 1998, a $9.215 million bond was issued with a 3.6 percent interest rate and had risen to 4.65 percent. The refinanced rate will charge an annual interest of…

Manalapan: Three towns express interest in dispatch proposal
By Tim O’Meilia
The Manalapan Town Commission’s thoughts of farming out its police dispatch services has drawn interest from three local police departments.
Representatives of neighboring towns Lantana and Ocean Ridge and nearby Delray Beach all attended a Nov. 15 meeting to hear details about a request for proposal issued by the town.
The proposal seeks bids on two levels of service: to exclusively handle 911 police dispatch calls and related…

Along the Coast: Towns, activists raise concerns about regional beach plan
By Tim O’Meilia
Officials of south county coastal towns fear that signing on to a regional beach management plan now in the works would cost their taxpayers money without guaranteeing any new sand on eroding beaches.
Several environmental groups think that the plan — designed to streamline obtaining permits and treat regions as a whole instead of individually — will short-circuit their attempts to challenge projects.
The inlet-to-inlet plan…

Lantana: Town proposes tax rate remain same
By Mary Thurwachter
Tax rates haven’t been raised in Lantana for 11 years and that won’t change this year.
Council members set the preliminary tax rate at $3.24 per $1,000 of a home’s assessed value at their July 23 meeting.
“We’ve been through the worst (of the recession),” Mayor Dave Stewart said, expressing confidence in the town manager’s handling of the budget and adding that the town had sufficient reserves.
“This is not a good…

Along the Coast: Area removed from inlet-to-inlet plan as environmental study revived
By Tim O’Meilia
It’s the old “good news/bad news” cliché.
The good news is that the elusive environmental impact study for the perhaps illusory plan to save South Palm Beach’s eroding beach and maintain Lantana’s seawall is being revived.
The bad news is that the project has been removed from the list of beach projects to be included in the new inlet-to-inlet beach management plan being written by state, county and municipal officials to guide…
