Residents and guests received an overview on the past, present, and future of ISIS
(Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) - On Wednesday, August 19th, Professor Jeffrey S. Morton, Ph.D., visited Devonshire at PGA National to share his presentation, “The ISIS Challenge”. Dr. Morton is a professor of International Law at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association, and is the founder and director of the Diplomacy Program. He has been presenting at Devonshire for over ten years, but many residents have also become familiar with him as students in his FAU lifelong learning courses. This presentation was part of the community’s summer lecture series, which will conclude in September.
More than 150 residents and guests poured into The Stratford performing arts center at Devonshire to listen to Dr. Morton’s most recent presentation. His program focused on the emergence of ISIS including an overview of how they receive funds, their history, the territory they control, how they communicate, and their future as a “terror organization supreme,” as Dr. Morton referred to them.
Dr. Morton suggested that western intervention, power vacuums, social media outlets, and radicalized Muslims are fueling the strength of ISIS; however, he believes the organization will fail based on several factors including its inability to fight armies, hold contested territory, and govern. Dr. Morton suggests four main focal points to consider when considering action against ISIS: attack their financial sources, derail recruitment efforts, institute full scale cyber campaigns, and ensure domestic security with the understanding that citizens may have to surrender some privacies.
Following his presentation, Dr. Morton answered questions from residents and guests.
